Description
I began this painting en plein air (French impressionist term meaning in open air) on the misty banks of the beautiful Bonnie Lake. The fog provided interesting atmosphere and a peaceful heaviness I was drawn to.
There was nothing in particular that day I had in mind, and had been driving the Glenn Highway National Scenic Byway, looking for something to inspire me. This is a 135-mile stretch of road that takes travelers north of Anchorage and along historic pathways and natural wonders of Alaska. It is literally an assault on the senses, it is THAT beautiful.
I feel it is impossible to stuff that much beauty into a little plein air painting. There are times that such majesty doesn't feel real, and it overwhelms me. So when I saw the simple sign for Bonnie Lake, I felt it would offer a landscape closer to my speed, beside, who could resist such a name?
As I painted on this quiet (and for the time being deserted) lake shore, I reflected on the stories from my family as to how much they loved their Crystal Lake on the East Coast of the US. In the stillness I could almost hear their squeals of laughter as the family reunited there year and year. While I'm sure this Bonnie lake looks nothing like theirs, I am also certain that there are families building the same happy memories on its shores. I gave the original to my Israeli grandmother as a gift in the hopes that she will always know my deep and abiding love for her, regardless of us living worlds apart.
May Bonnie Lake bring the peace and serenity of happy generational memories into your home as well. ~ Tali
