Painting en plein air (on sight in open air) is not for the faint of heart in any location. But Alaska offers a particular set of challenges. If it isn't freezing and dark, it is most likely raining, overcast, offering very flat light and obstructing views of the mountains. So what a thrill it was to be able to complete this painting on site and nail down my concept immediately. Instead of focusing on the peaks, I painted the intersection between Pioneer Peak, and Twin Peaks, that is readily visible to anyone driving the Glenn Highway. I wanted to convey the sheer enormity of these mountains as compared to the minutia of the man-made highway. This is the feeling I get when I look at a master painter's work--as if I am standing in awe at the feet of a giants. The original sold at it's first exhibition.

I am totally impressed, Talya! You managed to say so much with so few colors and brushstrokes. It reads like a much larger painting. I love the bright yellows in the foreground. You are, indeed, a master painter! f/v
Brian Gilna
BEAUTIFUL!
ANA MARIA EDULESCU
Wow !!! How masterfuly you rendered the majesty of the mountains in just few amazingly effective brush strokes, Talya. The touches of yellow in the foreground and the red cadmium are simply brilliant. Love this. f,v
Talya Johnson replied:
You are incredibly perceptive, Ana! The cad red (actually bright red I like to use instead because of it's intense saturation) was mixed into all my colors in this painting in order to keep it harmonized! Thanks so much! I actually scraped the first try at this so I could get as few strokes as possible. :)

I feel the sense of both my smallness and the immensity of creation, that makes mountains and valleys, rivers and oceans, and yet allows me to still be witness to all its beauty. I feel that awe as I take this painting in.
Talya Johnson replied:
I'm so glad I was able to express all that to you, Julia!
Dumba Peter
